CAA PROTESTS

The Shaheen Bagh protest in Delhi began in December 2019 as a peaceful sit-in against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), led primarily by Muslim women. Operating around the clock, the protest also voiced concerns over police action, unemployment, poverty, and women's safety. It quickly became a symbol of non-violent resistance and drew national and international attention. The movement inspired similar protests in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and in parts of Assam and Bihar, reflecting widespread concerns across the country. While many saw it as a powerful act of democratic dissent, others criticized its impact on public life and its political undertones. Despite the absence of formal leadership, Shaheen Bagh became a focal point of debate during the 2020 Delhi elections. The protest continued until March 2020, when it was cleared due to COVID-19 restrictions. Although it did not lead to a repeal of the CAA, the protest left a lasting impression on the national conversation about citizenship, identity, and the right to peaceful assembly.
