INDIAN FARMERS' PROTEST
In the agricultural heartland of India, a wave of protest surged against the government's Farm Bills of 2020, sparking one of the largest movements in recent history. The contentious laws, labeled "anti-farmer" by many, triggered widespread discontent among agricultural communities, particularly in Punjab and Haryana. Under the banner of the Dilli Chalo (Let's go to Delhi) movement, tens of thousands of farmers marched towards the nation's capital, demanding the repeal of laws they feared would leave them vulnerable to corporate exploitation. However, their journey was met with resistance, as authorities employed water cannons, batons, and tear gas to deter their advance. Despite legal interventions and government assurances, including the Supreme Court's stay on the laws' implementation, the protesters remained steadfast in their demands. Ultimately, in November 2021, the Indian government acceded to their calls, repealing the controversial bills. Yet, the farmers' struggle persisted, with ongoing demands for guaranteed minimum support prices and a commitment to doubling farmers' incomes. The movement, marked by its resilience and unity, underscored the deep-seated concerns within India's agricultural sector and the ongoing dialogue between farmers and policymakers.
